Reaching out.

It was a cloudy, cold day as I strolled around the neighborhood on Christmas. These little stray berries caught my eye. As if they wandered over to the similarly colored curtain and said, "hey! I like your style." A reminder that there are little bright spots everywhere.

Helmersbuurt Christmas Day 2008

The Dutch really don't do the Christmas light thing much at all. A stroll around my neighborhood on Christmas day didn't take me by many festive decorations. Way in the background you can one exception, a little tree done up with lights, outside.

Unique holiday arrangement.

This was just about impossible to take a picture of, but I was pleased with this unusual pairing of holiday flora. I put mistletoe in with lillies, and the result was a nice clean arrangement that still gave a nod to the season. If you do this, think ahead with your arrangment so you won't be fussing with it much, coz those dang white berries tumble off at the slightest tug.

CNN oops

I was going through pics and found this, which I shot about a week ago. For those of you with tiny computer screens, the caption reads "Clashes, strike shit down Greece airport." OOPS! Bit of a typo there folks. I sometimes think the international version of CNN is a bit looser.

News Anchor Fashion

'tis the little things that make expat life so interesting. Netherland news anchor fashion, as demonstrated below by Miss-Just-Jogged-Over-From-The-Breakfast-Table AND as demonstrated on the right by the It's-Wednesday-And-I'll-Wear-Red-Satin-If-I-Want-To weather lady here. The most surreal aspect of this, to those of us raised by well-groomed USA fantasy news people, is that both the super casual anchor AND the extra "glamorous" weather lady appeared in the same newscast. Believe me, to an American, this is very disturbing.

La Naranja

Let the panic begin!!! We've done it! We've rented a store front in Amsterdam. We are on our way to becoming merchants in the Netherlands. We have a long way to go, and it was a long way to get here: one and half years of searching for a suitable space. But what a beautiful space it is, and will be in the weeks-months-years to come. Much to do, but we're happy about all of it. It's very exciting to drive down a new road. The only way to new things, eh?
